Training on Remote Monitoring of Glacial Systems for Scientists from Central Asian Countries

On March 11-15, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, a 5-day training course on remote monitoring of glacial systems using ArcGIS software was conducted in the form of lectures and practical exercises. The training was organized by the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center of category 2 under the auspices of UNESCO with the support of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) within the framework of the Green Central Asia Programme.

The training participants were scientists and young specialists from various research institutes in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

During the practical exercises, the training participants conducted general studies of glaciation in the proposed basin (the Zeravshan River basin) and independent studies of 12 river basins of Central Asia with the calculation of the area of open and armoured parts of glaciers (for 2-3 time slices), as well as the rate of degradation of glaciation and calculation possible errors in the automated and manual determination of glacier areas.

This training allowed participants to gain more in-depth theoretical and practical skills in glacier interpretation at both the national and regional levels.
