On February 8-9, 2024, in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, the GIZ Regional Program “Green Central Asia” jointly with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Center “Promotion of Sustainable Development” held the “Central Asian Forum on E-Waste: Dialogue for Progress and Cooperation”.
The goal of the Forum was to strengthen regional cooperation through the exchange of experience and best practices on the collection and recycling of E-waste.
The event was attended by representatives of authorized environmental authorities, statisticians, business community and non-governmental organizations from all Central Asian countries, as well as leading experts in the field of E-waste management.
During the two-day event, participants discussed global trends and challenges in e-waste management, problems and achievements of Central Asian countries in the field of e-waste management, development of circular electronics principles in Central Asia, improvement of e-waste statistics, e-waste collection and recycling technologies and extended responsibility of producers and importers.
The Forum provided a starting point for further discussions and actions aimed at tackling the e-waste problem in Central Asia and developing a regional waste management system.
For reference:
The issue of e-waste is a pressing challenge facing the global community today. Every year the amount of electronics used in everyday life and in production increases, and, consequently, the number of obsolete or failed devices that require environmentally sound management is growing.
Over the past decades, Central Asian countries have been the site of intensive economic development, including the introduction of modern technologies and the increased use of electronics.
According to the Regional Monitoring of e-waste of CIS + Georgia in 2019, there were about 324 thousand tons of e-waste in Central Asian countries. Most of the waste was generated in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The highest per capita e-waste generation in 2019 was in Kazakhstan (7.3 kg per person per year), Kyrgyzstan (1.5 kg per person per year) and Tajikistan (1.4 kg per person per year) accounted for the least amount of e-waste according to UNITAR.
According to international estimates, e-waste generation in the region is set to increase, which requires immediate attention and action from the public, private and civil sectors.
