On 28 September, representatives of the Inter-governmental Working Group for the development of the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Central Asia held an online meeting.
At this meeting, representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, relevant line ministries and state committees, as well as international, regional and national experts discussed the finalisation of the strategic document.
Over the past year and a half, GIZ programs ‘Green Central Asia’ and “Integrative and Climate-sensitive Land Use in Central Asia” have fully supported this process by providing a platform and engaging national and international experts. The Regional Working Group has prepared the ground and developed a mechanism of interaction between Central Asian countries to overcome the negative impacts of climate change and implement adaptation measures.
The final text of the draft strategy was agreed at the meeting, and it is expected that now the Strategy will be adopted by Central Asian countries and presented at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP-28) in Dubai in December this year.
At the recent Consultative Meeting of Central Asian Heads of State in Dushanbe, the Presidents of the Central Asian countries also expressed the need for joint efforts to address climate challenges. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev said: “Our practical contribution to climate sustainability and green development can also be the adoption of the Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy”.
