Turkmenistan Strengthens Scientific Expertise in Climate Action and the Energy Transition

A series of academic and technical workshops featuring experts from Clausthal University of Technology (TU Clausthal, Germany) has concluded in Turkmenistan. The events were held within the framework of the project ‘European Union for a Green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2029’, co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by GIZ.

The workshops built on a visit by German experts in March, when Turkmen specialists explored approaches to integrating renewable energy sources and innovative methods for ensuring well integrity using artificial intelligence. This latest phase of cooperation focused on practical solutions to support Turkmenistan in fulfilling its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) and strengthening national scientific and technical capacity.

The programme covered two key scientific and educational institutions in the country.

13 October, Ashgabat. At the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas of the State Concern “Turkmengas,” German and Turkmen specialists discussed the guiding principles of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), advanced leak detection and repair (LDAR) methods, multispectral imaging, and distributed sensor systems for real-time monitoring. Particular attention was given to the application of artificial intelligence for data validation and processing.

14-15 October, Mary. At the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan, participants explored opportunities for integrating renewable energy sources, including geothermal and hydrogen technologies, biomass utilisation, power conversion technologies, and energy system modelling tailored to Turkmenistan.

Regular knowledge exchange between the international scientific community and national experts helps lay the groundwork for introducing modern technological solutions, strengthening national expertise, and advancing climate action and the green energy transition in Turkmenistan.
