On October 29, 2026, Akyl Toktobaev, Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, and Victor Wetzel, Country Director of GIZ in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, signed an agreement to extend the “Climate Risk Management in Central Asia” programme.
As a reminder, the programme is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Government on behalf of the German Government and is co-funded by UK International Development. It covers a wide range of measures, from practical assistance to individual villages to the promotion of regional cooperation.
In Kyrgyzstan, based on climate risk assessments conducted in the Shahimardan and Isfaramsay river basins, concrete measures for climate change adaptation are already being implemented. In the village of Kesken-Tash, 230 local residents completed emergency response drills, and installation locations for early warning sirens were officially agreed upon with the Ministry of Emergency Situations. A mudflow and landslide hazard analysis was conducted alongside training for 63 specialists, and local councils (keneshes) in three municipalities approved climate-resilient pasture management plans to launch over 30 local adaptation measures.
Additionally, under the Small Grants and Climate Innovation Fund (SGCIF), developed jointly with the UK FCDO, five projects received support in the first round, four of which involve organizations from Kyrgyzstan. The results of the second call for proposals will be announced in November.
