Finland and Central Asia Strengthen Cooperation on Sustainable Groundwater Management

From 5 to 9 October 2026 representatives of ministries and agencies responsible for groundwater monitoring from all five Central Asian countries took part in a study visit to Finland, organised as part of the project’s cooperation with the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK).

The visit aimed to strengthen the technical and institutional capacity of Central Asian countries to manage water resources in a climate-resilient manner. It formed part of the project’s formal partnership with GTK, an internationally recognised centre of expertise in geology, hydrogeology and groundwater research.

During the programme, participants explored Finland’s approaches to groundwater monitoring, including field sampling techniques, laboratory analysis and data management systems. They also learned about Finland’s water governance framework and EU best practices in integrated water resources management.

The exchange with Finnish experts provided participants with valuable professional insights and practical knowledge that can be adapted to Central Asian conditions. The experience gained is expected to support the further development of national groundwater monitoring systems and strengthen regional capacity for sustainable groundwater management in the face of climate change.
