Aral-Syr Darya Basin Council: Coordinating Efforts for Effective Water Resources Management

On 27 October 2026, the 30th meeting of the Aral-Syr Darya Basin Council was held in Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, with the support of the regional project ‘Climate-Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia’ implemented by GIZ.

The meeting brought together representatives of government authorities, regional departments, water management organisations and other stakeholders from Kyzylorda and Turkistan regions, as well as the city of Shymkent.

Participants discussed current water management issues in the Aral-Syr Darya Water Management Basin. Topics included comprehensive inspections of hydraulic infrastructure under republican and municipal ownership, as well as progress in establishing water protection zones and buffer strips along water bodies within populated areas.

Special attention was given to the results of Phases III and IV of the development of the Aral-Syr Darya Basin Plan and the activities of the Kyzylorda and Turkistan branches of the National Hydrogeological Service “Kazhydrogeology”.

The meeting provided a platform for sharing information and coordinating approaches to addressing key water management challenges. Regular dialogue among government authorities, water management organisations and other stakeholders helps strengthen inter-agency cooperation and promote the basin approach to water resources management
