New Equipment Delivered to the Cotton Research Institute of Turkmenistan

On August 11, 2026, the official handover of new equipment for the comprehensive monitoring of soil conditions and land resources took place at the Cotton Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan.

The agriculture of the Murghab basin has faced critical climate pressure: in July 2026, temperatures hovered between +43…+48°C for weeks. Abnormal heat and prolonged dry winds led to colossal moisture losses, causing agricultural crops to suspend vegetation and enter a state of forced dormancy. The situation is exacerbated by a decrease in the Murghab River’s flow and a water deficit, which provokes rapid land salinization. To halt the swift degradation of irrigated lands, regular monitoring using modern equipment is necessary, along with the joint efforts of the state, scientists, and farmers. Strengthening the technical arsenal of such an important institute will be a significant practical step toward increasing the climate resilience of soils.

The Institute received a manual soil auger for creating monitoring wells and extracting soil samples from various horizons, a set of tensiometers for measuring soil moisture, a surveying level with a leveling rod and tripod for determining elevation differences, a soil penetrometer for assessing soil compaction, and a portable soil laboratory for conducting comprehensive soil analysis in the field.

The day’s program included not only the official equipment handover but also a practical training session: a brief operational orientation and a field trip, where specialists could familiarize themselves with its application under real conditions. At the Cotton Research Institute’s experimental plot, specialists explored the technical capabilities of a Bosch surveying level and leveling rods. The level allows for high-precision determination of elevation differences between terrain points. The data obtained helps identify relief features that can affect the distribution of irrigation water, enabling more informed decision-making in management and field research.

Later, the laboratory will also receive a pH/EC meter for measuring acidity, electrical conductivity, total mineralization, and water salinity, as well as an electric water level meter for determining groundwater levels and a laboratory water distiller for producing distilled water.

This initiative is being implemented with the technical support of the regional program “Climate Risk Management in Central Asia.” The transfer of new equipment to the Cotton Research Institute is one of the adaptation measures designed to protect the Murghab River basin in the face of climate change, implemented based on a previously conducted climate risk assessment study. The specific goal of this measure is to improve soil conservation methods to enhance water retention and combat salinization under changing climate conditions.
