Developing IWRM Programs at Bachelor, Master, and Postgraduate Levels

From May 13 to 15, 2026, the workshop on supporting Central Asian academic institutions in developing integrated water resources management (IWRM) programs at bachelor, master, and postgraduate levels was successfully held in the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers institute (TIIAME).

The content of the workshop was organized by the team from Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ETH, hydrosolutions GmbH and it was shared with 5 universities from Central Asia. Comprehensive curriculum assessments were conducted at all five partner universities – TIIAME (Uzbekistan), Al-Farabi KazNU (Kazakhstan), KNAU (Kyrgyzstan), Academy of Public Administration (Tajikistan), and Turkmen Agricultural University (Turkmenistan). Based on subsequent consultations with each institution, four priority course modules have been identified for collaborative development:

  • AI-assisted coding for water resources and environmental engineering
  • Watershed Modeling
  • Groundwater Modeling
  • Integrated Water Resources Management in Central Asia

ETH presented AI-based software for flow computation and forecasts considering the wide range of input parameters of hydrological model showing its robustness and sensitivity. The Central Asian experts acquainted with additionally experiences of programming codes in hydrological modelling.
