Green Central Asia Supported the 15th Conference of the Central Asian Leadership Programme

From 15 to 19 September 2025, the Regional programme ‘Green Central Asia, Phase II’, implemented by GIZ, supported the 15th Conference of the Central Asian Leadership Programme.

The event was organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in cooperation with the Secretariat of the High-Level Dialogue Platform of the Swiss Initiative ‘Blue Peace Central Asia’, and the OSCE Programme Offices in Astana, Bishkek, and Dushanbe.

The conference placed a special focus on developing professional skills in public speaking, strategic communication, and countering disinformation. Participants also received training in techniques for effective audience engagement and media interaction. They gained practical experience in giving interviews, participating in press conferences, and preparing meaningful and persuasive statements that resonate with their target audiences.

The programme further provided theoretical knowledge on the impact of climate change on regional ecosystems and on sustainable water management. Particular attention was paid to the current state of regional and transboundary cooperation, as well as to sustainable governance, including gender aspects and inclusive decision-making.

On the final day, participants visited the Botanical Garden of Almaty, a specially protected natural area of national importance. Guided tours introduced young leaders to research and scientific developments in the conservation, protection, reproduction, and use of plant biodiversity, including rare and endangered species, and highlighted their role in addressing climate change challenges in Central Asia.

Background: The Central Asian Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development (CALP) is an initiative of CAREC, implemented since 2010. The programme aims to strengthen the leadership potential of young and mid-level professionals from governmental, non-governmental, and private sector organizations working in the field of sustainable development in Central Asia. It is held annually and applies a multi-stakeholder approach to ensure a comprehensive understanding of environmental and sustainable development issues from a regional perspective.
