An online meeting of the Regional Task Force on Education for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition in Central Asia (RTEET), jointly organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), was held online. The event brought together representatives of ministries, technical universities, research institutes, and energy companies from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, along with international partners. The GIZ project Renewable Energy in Central Asia (EURECA) also takes part in the regional task force.
Held on 25 July 2025, the meeting aimed to define the thematic focus of a pilot curriculum on renewable energy, which is expected to be developed and piloted at technical universities across the region through 2025-26. As highlighted during the discussion, Central Asia has substantial potential for renewable energy development; however, achieving national energy transition goals will require a modernized education system and a qualified workforce. Participants discussed priority topics for the future course, selection criteria, and next steps. Among the most frequently mentioned themes were: the design and operation of solar and wind systems, integration of renewables in the grid, economics and policy of renewables, as well as the integration of gender and climate components into academic programs. The meeting concluded with an interactive poll, where participants expressed strong support for the initiative.
As a result of the meeting, it was agreed to refine the list of course topics, outline a preliminary curriculum structure, and identify universities to pilot the course. The next RTEET meeting is scheduled for October 2025, where a draft version of the course content will be discussed.
The meeting was jointly organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), as part of the OSCE project “Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Energy Sector in Central Asia”.
