Online Kick-off Meeting: Supporting Integrated Water Resources Management Education in Central Asia

On July 10, Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, ETH Zurich ( Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich) has officially launched work on the grant agreement “Supporting Central Asian Academic Institutions in Developing IWRM Programs at Bachelor, Master, and Postgraduate Levels” in the frame of ‘Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia’

To better assess the current needs of universities in Central Asia, ETH Zurich developed and shared a questionnaire with five partner universities. Three institutions responded and presented their initial inputs during bilateral meetings held on 10–11 July. The remaining two meetings are scheduled for 9–11 September 2025.

Key takeaways from the bilateral discussions:

Emphasis on the use of digital tools in IWRM education, such as WEAP, rainfall-runoff models, and remote sensing technologies.

The importance of integrating climate change projections and assessing their impact on natural water resources, including quantifying runoff changes due to temperature and precipitation shifts.

The need to equip dedicated classrooms with high-performance computers and specialized software, ensuring access for both teaching and training purposes.
