On November 6, 2024, the 87th meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (ICWC) was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. The GIZ Regional Programme “Climate-Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia” assisted the Turkmen side, represented by the national project partner, the State Committee for Water Management of Turkmenistan, in organizing the event, and supported the participation of delegations from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
The meeting was chaired by ICWC member from Turkmenistan – Genjiev D.M. with participation of ICWC members from Tajikistan – Shoimzoda D.S. and Uzbekistan – Khamrayev S.R. The meeting was attended by the heads of executive bodies: Mahramov M.Ya., BWO “Amudarya”, Kholkhudjaev O.A., BWO “Syrdarya”, Ziganshina D.R., SIC ICWC, Nazarov U.A., Secretariat, as well as invited persons. Chairman of the Executive Board of IFAS Mr. Orazbay A.T. also took part in the ICWC meeting.
The main results of the meeting:
- The reports were heard on the results of the use of limits and operating modes of reservoirs for the 2024 growing season in the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river basins;
- The limits of the countries’ water intake for the intermunicipal period 2024-2025 were approved. At the basins of the Amu Darya and Syrdarya rivers;
- The report was heard on the progress of the work of the members and executive bodies of the ICWC on the implementation of proposals and initiatives expressed at meetings of the heads of the founders of the IFAS in Turkmenbashi (2018) and Dushanbe (2023).
