As part of the second component of the “Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia” program, funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), a transboundary training on climate-resilient Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) was held in Taraz on October 15. Specialists from basin organizations in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan participated. Additionally, on October 17, a training was held in Shymkent for the Aral-Syrdarya Basin Inspection (ASBI) and specialists from the Lower Syrdarya Basin Irrigation Systems Management (BUIS) of Uzbekistan. These trainings marked the first in a series of activities aimed at building the capacity of basin organizations, with more planned through the end of 2025. The trainings are developed and conducted by the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC).
The goal of the trainings is to provide practical knowledge on the implementation of IWRM in the context of climate change and to teach water management technologies. Special attention was given to automated systems that can improve water use efficiency in agriculture.
The project plans to conduct 24 gender-sensitive trainings at national, transboundary, and regional levels. These trainings aim to enhance the capacity of water resource specialists and incorporate gender aspects into the water management process. The activities will contribute to strengthening the role of women in decision-making related to water use, as well as promoting an inclusive and sustainable approach to water resources management in the face of climate change.
