On October 23, an expanded meeting of the Yesil Basin Council took place in Astana, supported within the framework of the first component of the program “Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia.” The program is funded by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
The event was attended by representatives of government bodies, scientists, representatives of public organizations and enterprises, as well as specialists from neighbouring countries — Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. The main topics of discussion included reducing water losses, establishing water protection zones and strips, and implementing flood control measures in the Yesil Basin, which includes the Akmola and North Kazakhstan regions, as well as certain districts of the Karaganda and Kostanay regions.
As a result of the meeting, members of the Basin Council received recommendations developed through collective discussion and experience sharing.
Representatives from the Central Asian countries expressed their gratitude for organizing the event and emphasized the importance of exchanging experiences on basin-level water resource management. At the conclusion of the meeting, it was proposed to continue cooperation and strengthen ties between countries to further exchange knowledge on mechanisms and approaches to water resource management based on the basin principle.
