On September 13, an official kick-off meeting took place in Ashgabat for the new GIZ project “EU for a green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2028” financed by the European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office.
The project launch was preceded by the signing of a MoU in May between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, the State Concern “Turkmengaz” and GIZ. The parties agreed to strengthen and expand their bilateral partnership in energy, environmental protection, and climate policy.
The new bilateral program, according to the terms of reference approved by the Steering Committee, will focus on implementing the signed agreement. It will specifically support Turkmenistan’s efforts in “green” sustainable development by applying international best practices and EU standards.
The core activities of the project will focus on establishing an effective dialogue between the EU and Turkmenistan’s government agencies. This includes promoting renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency by reducing methane and greenhouse gas emissions, building national capacity, and raising public awareness, with a special focus on women and youth.
