Side event at COP 28: The Importance of Central Asia’s Cryosphere in Climate Change Adaptation

On December 3, at the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP) in Dubai, a side event was hosted at the Central Asia Pavilion with the title “Monitoring climate change impacts in Central Asia’s cryosphere: cooperation, research and technology for improved climate change adaptation and resilience”.

The side event was organized by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Republic of Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz Republic and the UNESCO Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center in Kazakhstan.

Speakers from different countries and relevant institutions with capacities and knowledge for cryosphere monitoring and glacio-hydrological modelling for early warning and water allocation presented lessons learned. They discussed the importance of cooperation, data sharing, research, and technology to improve the understanding of the high-altitude water cycle and achieve greater climate change adaptation and resilience in the region.
