This is a unique opportunity to visit the dried bottom of the Aral Sea, visit the Kok-Aral Dam, meet like-minded people, experts, researchers and international organizations actively involved in the restoration of the Aral Sea, and even take part in the development of a project to improve the situation in the region.

5th Aral Summer School offers three thematic directions:

Biodiversity: Discover the rich biodiversity of the region, understand the challenges it faces, and explore effective conservation strategies.

Oral History: Explore the social and cultural impact of the Aral Sea disaster through oral history.

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM): Learn about the importance of coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources.

These three thematic are helpful for shaping the future of water, biodiversity, and climate leadership in the Central Asian region.

Key Details:

Date: 21–31 August 2023

Location: Almaty and Aral Sea region, Kazakhstan

Eligibility: Young professionals and students from Central Asia countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghan students residing in Kazakhstan). Participants from other regions would have to cover their round trip to Kazakhstan additionally. Knowledge of English is a definite advantage.
