AARHUS CONVENTION: Effective Public Participation for Good Governance, Healthy Environment and Sustainable Development

On 1-2 of June in Tashkent, a regional round table on Aarhus Convention: Effective public participation for good governance, healthy environment and sustainable development was held. Green Central Asia jointly with other international partners (OSCE, UNDP), supported the round table, which was organised by the secretariat of the UNECE Aarhus Convention in cooperation with the Ministry of, Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan.

The round table aimed to promote better understanding of benefits and opportunities offered by the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) and its Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (Protocol on PRTRs) as effective tools for supporting the countries in achieving good governance, healthy environment and sustainable development. The participants benefited from experiences of different governments and stakeholders in the implementation of Convention and Protocol, including on matters related to legal frameworks, institutional settings, financial aspects and practical arrangements.

The issues to support the implementation of the Concept of environmental protection in the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030 adopted by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 30 October 2019 PD-5863 and the implementation of recommendations of 2020 Environmental Performance Review of Uzbekistan were discussed.
