On Friday, March 17, 2023, a Joint meeting of Central Asian heads of authorities with the Regional Working Group on Glacier Monitoring and Modelling was held in Tashkent.
At this meeting, a joint memorandum of cooperation was signed between the following organizations in Central Asia: Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center under the auspices of UNESCO (Kazakhstan); Tien Shan Alpine Scientific Center at the Institute of Water Problems and Hydropower of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic; Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences (Kyrgyz Republic); State Scientific Institution “Center for Research of Glaciers at the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan”; Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan; Center of Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Uzbekistan; Institute of Geology and Geophysics named after H.M. Abdullayev, State establishment university of Geological Sciences.
The memorandum is also expected to be signed soon by the Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Hydrometeorology Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan.
The main purpose of this document is to develop and agree on a common regional methodology for glaciers monitoring, assessment and forecasting to strengthen regional coordination and address existing shortcomings in determining and forecasting precipitation, snow cover and glaciers behaviour, as well as the development of a common approach for research and for the elaboration of appropriate models in the Central Asian Region.
