Meeting of Representatives of Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Members of Parliaments of Central Asian Countries on Climate Change

On September 20, 2022 in Almaty, Green Central Asia together with the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia (CAREC) organized the Seventh Meeting of Representatives of MFA and Members of Parliaments of the Central Asian countries. The issues discussed at the meeting were the progress in improving legislation and implementing climate policy in the Central Asia countries, as well as the progress in implementing the undertaken international climate commitments. _The participants of the meeting also discussed a draft regional statement from the countries to inform the global community about the region’s efforts to implement the Paris Agreement, and on the preparation of the region for the upcoming 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27 of the UNFCCC), which will be held in November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Representatives of international organizations and diplomatic missions accredited in Kazakhstan were invited to the meeting. The welcome speeches were delivered by H.E. Kestutis Jankauskas, EU Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan and Mr. Mario-Ingo Zoos, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

A dialogue between representatives of ministries of foreign affairs and members of parliaments of the Central Asian countries to discuss urgent issues related to environment management in the region, and to exchange knowledge, experience and best practices was initiated by the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) in 2016 with the support of the EU. Climate change issues and strengthening intersectoral cooperation were first mentioned in the agenda of this dialogue platform in 2019. With the support of the World Bank, CAREC supported the proposal of representatives of ministries of foreign affairs and members of parliaments of the Central Asian countries to hold such events twice a year. Thus, six meetings of representatives of MFA and members of parliaments of the Central Asian countries were organized.

At the Sixth Meeting of the Representatives of MFA and Members of Parliaments of the Central Asian Countries, in her address, Dr. Caroline Milow, Progamme Manager, Green Central Asia – Transboundary dialogue on climate, environment and security in Central Asia and Afghanistan, GIZ, noted that it was highly important to conduct a dialogue between representatives of MFA and members of parliaments of the countries and announced the readiness of GIZ to further support the work of the platform of MFA and members of parliaments in 2022 and 2023.
