Central Asian countries in the combat against climate change: consensus building and next steps

On July 7, in Tashkent representatives of the Regional Working Group (RWG) formed under the Green Central Asia Initiative gathered to further develop a common regional document on adaptation to climate change in Central Asia. Representatives of Ministries of Foreign Affairs and relevant line ministries and government agencies/committees discussed the draft concept of a regional document, description, title, format and structure of the document. Proposals were sent in advance to countries for approval in June 2022.

All representatives of the countries decided to name the document “Regional Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change in Central Asia”, which will contain an introductory part and a mandatory section of measures to implement the strategy. The issues of financing perspectives were also discussed.

Regarding the structure of the strategy, the members of the Regional Working Group supported it in general but also will provide further input and comments. The content of the strategy will jointly be elaborated in the coming months.

Next steps: International and national experts will continue to work on the Strategy according to the structure approved by the Regional Working Group.
