Striving for Regional Cooperation: Regional Action Plan Agreed

Over the past few months, the Regional Working Group for the development of a Regional Action Plan within the framework of the Green Central Asia Initiative, which included representatives of various ministries of the Central Asian countries has been working on the preparation of a unified document that was forwarded to the Central Asian countries for approval in September 2021.

This document was developed in accordance with the provisions of the Joint Declaration signed at the high-level conference on the launch of the Green Central Asia Initiative held in Berlin in 2020 between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

Currently, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of all Central Asian countries have sent the Diplomatic Notes of Endorsement and Support to the submitted Regional Action Plan. Thus, the Regional Action Plan has been agreed upon by all parties, and the GIZ Green Central Asia Programme is starting to implement the joint actions stated in the plan.

The Joint Action Plan provides for the strengthening of the regional political dialogue, as well as the implementation of joint actions within the framework of regional priorities agreed by the parties and capacity building with the various regional and international partners such as the EU, UNFCCC, UNECE, UNESCO, UNDP, WB, ADB, SDC, USAID, with civil society partners: IUCN, NABU, Central Asian Geosciences Institute (CAIAG) in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz Republic.

The countries focused mainly on such topics as:

– Climate change impact on regional water resources management

– Climate change impact on land management and biodiversity

– Cooperation and contribution to international instruments

– Waste management

Starting the implementation of the Regional Action Plan, the Green Central Asia Initiative congratulates all on this event – the establishment of a regional political dialogue – and invites all national and international partners to cooperate towards enhancing the effectiveness of the joint actions and achieving synergies in the implementation of individual projects within the framework of the agreed Regional Action Plan.
