On June 29, during the official meeting of the IFAS Board in Dushanbe, the Aral Sea Basin Program (ASBP-4) was signed by four deputy prime ministers.
The most extensive component of the “Berlin Process,” the predecessor of Green Central Asia, was the program “Transboundary Water Management in Central Asia,” commissioned by the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Between 2009 and 2020, the programme actively supported the three consecutive EC IFAS chairmanships of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and contributed to the drafting of the Aral Sea Basin Programmes 3 and 4. The ASBP-4 was elaborated by Central Asian experts in close cooperation with a German expert provided by the GIZ programme. The drafting of the ASBP-4 served as a clearing house process for the definition of priorities of regional cooperation in Central Asia and will be shared with all national, regional and international stakeholders in the region for support and implementation. Besides supporting a regional and cooperative approach to water, climate and environment challenges the goal is to improv the livelihood of the population in the region.
