On October 3, as part of the celebration of the Syr Darya River Day, the Osh Forum ‘Kyrgyzstan’s water resources: conservation and rational use of the Syr Darya, Karadarya and Naryn mountain rivers for future generations’ was held at Osh State University.
The forum brought together representatives of government institutions — the Water Resources Service, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Kyrgyz Republic — as well as representatives of international and local organizations, universities, and other stakeholders.
The event, organized by ‘Green Alliance KG’ with the support of the regional program ‘Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia’, implemented by GIZ, gathered over 100 participants to discuss joint solutions for strengthening water security in Central Asia’s mountain ecosystems.
Participants addressed key climate challenges affecting the Syr Darya, Kara Darya, and Naryn rivers, including glacier melting, snow cover reduction, and seasonal flow variability.
University representatives presented results of hydrological and ecological studies, emphasizing the need for localized climate adaptation strategies.
International partners shared innovative water-saving technologies, artificial glacier concepts, and models of transboundary cooperation under various initiatives.
Special attention was given to youth engagement — students and young researchers proposed eco-educational initiatives and awareness campaigns aimed at promoting a culture of sustainable water use.
