On October 1, in the city of Khujand, Tajikistan, a festive event dedicated to the Syr Darya River Day was held under the slogan ‘Syr Darya — Our River, Our Future’.
The event was organized by the ‘Water Resources Department of the Syr Darya Basin Zone’ with the support of international and national development partners, including HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation, the regional programme ‘Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia’ (GIZ), UNDP, and others.
More than 250 participants took part in the celebration, representing leading higher education institutions of the Sughd region, such as Khujand State University, the ‘Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Tajikistan’, and the ‘Polytechnic Institute’.
As part of the event, an environmental cleanup campaign was held along the banks of the Syr Darya River, where students demonstrated a high level of engagement and environmental responsibility. After the cleanup, a quiz for students took place to promote environmental awareness.
School students made a special contribution to the programme by presenting creative works on the theme of protecting water resources. Recognising their efforts and involvement, winners of the quiz and drawing competition, as well as the most active participants, were awarded commemorative gifts.
