Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan Strengthen Cooperation in Groundwater Management

On July 17–18, a training seminar for representatives from Kazakhstan was held at the Uzbekhydrogeology premises in Tashkent as part of the EU4SustainableCentralAsia project. The event focused on the establishment of a situational center and the exchange of experience in groundwater management.

Participants from Kazakhstan included staff from the Ministry of Water Resources and Kazhydrogeology. They became acquainted with the digital monitoring tools currently used in Uzbekistan and discussed their potential adaptation to the context of Kazakhstan.

Dr. Caroline Milow, the Programme Manager, noted: ‘This meeting was only made possible thanks to the cooperation between the two countries, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The Memorandum of Understanding signed by Kazhydrogeology and UzHydromet in January this year is a clear example of regional cooperation in the field of groundwater.’

In August, with the support of the regional project ‘Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia’, the WaterBase information system will be handed over to the Kazakh side for further use.
