Modern technologies and innovative approaches: Turkmenistan delegation in Uzbekistan

As part of the large-scale project “EU for green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024–2028,” co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by GIZ, a significant study tour of a Turkmen delegation to the Republic of Uzbekistan (Republic of Karakalpakstan and Tashkent), took place. The visit, held from May 20-25, 2025, was a key preparatory step for launching an innovative pilot project in Turkmenistan focused on treatment of drainage water and the installation of solar panels in irrigation systems.

The main objective of the trip was an in-depth exchange of experience with leading scientific institutions in Uzbekistan specializing in microalgae research and their practical application in agriculture and water management. Turkmen specialists had a unique opportunity to study modern technologies and innovative approaches in detail. This will allow for a comprehensive analysis and assessment of the prospects for integrating the acquired knowledge into the pilot project “Drainage Water Treatment Using Microalgae and Installation of a Solar-Powered Water Pumping System.” This pilot project, aimed at the rational use of water resources and the development of renewable energy sources, is being implemented at the Research and Production Center for Renewable Energy in the city of Mary.

‘This study tour is not just an exchange of information; it’s an investment in Turkmenistan’s sustainable future and the practical implementation of advanced environmentally friendly technologies, emphasized a representative of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan.-Our direct familiarity with the successful experience of our Uzbek colleagues in water bioremediation and solar energy utilization will enable us to prepare for the implementation of the pilot project in Mary as effectively as possible and make a significant contribution to the development of a green economy and ensuring environmental security in our country’.

The Turkmen delegation included highly qualified specialists: a representative from the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan and representatives from the Research and Production Center for Renewable Energy of the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan.

During their visit, members of the Turkmen delegation visited several key institutions and initiatives in Uzbekistan. They familiarized themselves with the Karakalpakstan Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Youth Technopark in Nukus, and the International Innovation Center for the Aral Sea Region.

The delegation gained insights into measures for drainage water purification and climate change adaptation, as well as the progress of relevant pilot projects. Additionally, the Turkmen delegates were highly impressed by the exchange of views on the production and use of solar panels in higher educational institutions and industrial enterprises in Tashkent

For reference: The pilot project in Mary, launched based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed on May 14, 2024, between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, the State Concern “Turkmengas,” and GIZ, aims to create conditions for sustainable development and environmental security. Innovative methods for drainage water treatment using microalgae and the application of solar energy for water pumping systems are a significant step towards implementing green economy principles and increasing the efficiency of water resource use.
