The Fifth Kafirnigan River Basin Women’s Forum was held on 25 April 2025 in Dushanbe, bringing together more than 50 participants from different regions of Tajikistan. The Forum became a unique platform for bringing together women working in the water sector, agriculture, education, health, as well as activists and representatives of local communities. The event was held under the theme “Women’s Voice in the Era of Climate Change: Equitable and Effective Management for Water Sustainability”.
The event was organised under the Green Central Asia initiative to support women’s participation in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) processes, with a focus on the role of women in ensuring water security, climate change adaptation and sustainable development of the transboundary Kafirnigan River Basin.
Forum participants shared experiences, discussed barriers and opportunities for more active participation of women in decision-making, and developed joint recommendations for national and local water management bodies.
The results of the Basin Women’s Forum activities in the Kafirnigan River Basin were also presented at the Forum.
At the end of the event, the participants adopted a joint statement calling for the strengthening of the role of women in water management, including their participation in the development of the River Basin Management Plan for the Kafirnigan River Basin 2026-2030, which was submitted for inclusion in the minutes of the Kafirnigan River Basin Council.
