Research stay of water specialists from the Central Asian universities at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg

From February 24 to March 14, 2025, a research stay took place at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Germany, within the framework of the GIZ regional project “Climate-Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia”, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The research stay aimed to enhance the capacity of specialists from Central Asian basin organizations through collaboration on the development of a handbook and certification course on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Participants engaged in excursions, practical activities, and interactive training methods, gaining insights into German water management practices. Additionally, the stay included the development of an educational simulation game to support IWRM training.

Experts from Central Asia worked together with the MLU team to refine the IWRM handbook, incorporating region-specific strategies and modern teaching approaches. Discussions with German specialists and field visits provided valuable insights for sustainable and cross-sectoral water resources management.

The research stay served as a platform for cross-border collaboration, fostering knowledge exchange and the development of innovative solutions for addressing regional and national water management challenges.
