To develop effective e-waste management mechanisms and discuss strategic approaches, the Second Central Asian E-Waste Forum was held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on 4-5 March 2025.
The Forum was organised by the Green Central Asia programme, phase II, implemented by GIZ and the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD Center) with the support of the Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and other international partners
‘Solving the problem of e-waste requires a comprehensive approach. It is not only about recycling and disposal, but also the need for sustainable production, designing products to be recyclable and minimising waste. This Forum provides a unique opportunity to discuss the prospects for sustainable development, share best practices and strengthen co-operation between governments, the private sector and civil society.’ – Mr Martin Langer, Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Tajikistan, noted in his speech
The event was attended by more than 80 representatives of government agencies responsible for waste management and statistics, businesses and non-governmental organisations from all five Central Asian countries. Invited speakers included representatives from international organisations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Circular Economy Partnership (CEP), the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions, the German Federal Environment Agency, the Prevent Waste Alliance and others.
The Forum strengthened regional cooperation on e-waste management and provided an important platform for discussing the way forward. The participants expressed their intention to continue interaction, expand expert support and develop harmonised approaches to e-waste management at the national and regional levels.
