Situation Centre for Water Resources Management Opens in Astana

On 3 November 2026, the official opening of the Situation Centre took place at the Information and Analytical Centre for Water Resources (IAC) in Astana. The Centre was established with the support of the regional project “Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia”, implemented by GIZ. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The event brought together representatives of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Information and Analytical Centre for Water Resources, GIZ, as well as representatives of the Embassies of Germany and Switzerland.

The establishment of the Situation Centre aims to strengthen the IAC’s capacity in collecting, processing, analysing and visualising water-related data. The installed equipment and digital infrastructure provide opportunities for more efficient access to information and improved information support for water resources management.

During the event, the IAC team presented the Centre’s key functions and demonstrated the equipment installed, including an eight-screen video wall designed to visualise information on water resources.

The Situation Centre is expected to contribute to improving the quality of information support and facilitating informed decision-making in the water sector. It also provides a foundation for the further development of digital monitoring tools and enhanced data exchange, particularly in the context of transboundary water resources management.

The opening of the Centre marked an important step in strengthening cooperation between Kazakhstan, Germany and Switzerland in the field of sustainable water resources management and advancing the digital infrastructure of Kazakhstan’s water sector.
