Agreement on Climate Risk Management Signed at Eco Expo 2026

On June 3, 2026, at the international exhibition Eco Expo Central Asia 2026, a signing ceremony took place for the implementation agreement of the regional programme “Climate Risk Management in Central Asia” (CRM CA).

The ceremony took place within the event “Germany’s Cooperation with Central Asia: Partnership for Green Transformation”, dedicated to climate resilience issues.  The Deputy Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan Zhusipbek Kazbekov noted that the signing ceremony reflects not only a formal agreement but also a shared aspiration of the countries to turn climate challenges into opportunities for strengthening partnership. He emphasized that the current portfolio between Uzbekistan and GIZ includes 11 projects with a total value of around 125 million euros, 9 of which are currently under implementation.

The enhanced CRM CA programme framework introduces new mechanisms, including support for small grants for resilience initiatives and expanding access to climate finance.  During the panel session, CRM CA Programme Director Sergey Makarov highlighted the achievements in Uzbekistan: Climate Risk Assessment (CRA) conducted for the Isfayramsay, Shakhimardan, and Zarafshan river basins, alongside ongoing and planned adaptation measures based on its findings. For Uzhydromet, a massive volume of historical meteorological, hydrological, and agrometeorological data has been digitalized, covering a total of 700 years. Furthermore, in the arid Navoi region, a modern smart drip irrigation system has been established across 10 hectares of pilot orchards, utilizing digital soil moisture sensors and an automated weather station. Currently, the SMART Patrol System is being installed at the Zarafshan National Park, enabling real-time monitoring of endangered species populations in the face of climate change.

The signed agreement once again underscores the joint commitment of Central Asian countries to collaboratively address environmental challenges and deploy digital innovations for the effective management of water and land resources in a changing climate.

Within the event, an implementation agreement was also signed for the project “Sustainable and Climate-Sensitive Urban Development in Central Asia”.
