Regional Training on Integrated Water Resources Management in Central Asia

On 5-6 February, a two-day regional training was held in Tashkent, marking the final event of a project aimed at strengthening cooperation among Central Asian countries in the field of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

The training brought together up to 30 representatives of basin and water management organisations from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as well as staff of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya Basin Water Organisations and relevant line ministries and agencies. Particular attention was given to the participation of women professionals from the water sector.

The programme focused on strengthening the capacities of senior and mid-level water sector specialists and covered the following key topics:

  • water resources planning and management with consideration of climate risks;
  • implementation of IWRM principles and progress under SDG indicator 6.5.1;
  • rational water use and water-saving approaches;
  • basin planning and coordination of water allocation at basin level;
  • automation of transboundary hydrological stations;
  • the Water–Energy–Food Nexus approach;

The training combined expert presentations, practical exercises and moderated discussions, fostering experience sharing and strengthening regional dialogue. Training materials prepared by regional experts will be made available to participants and published on the Eurasian River Basin Management Portal (www.riverbp.net) for further use.

On the second day, participants visited the Charvak Reservoir on the Chirchik River, where they learned about hydraulic infrastructure and discussed practical aspects of water resources management on site.

The training represented an important step in strengthening the professional capacity of basin organisations in Central Asia and contributed to the further development of a certified basin management course, which is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
